Bye Week Teams: Atlanta, Denver, New Orleans, Washington

Thursday, October 5th

New England at Tampa Bay
Line: Patriots by 5½

The Patriots came out on the short end of the stick in a home loss to Carolina last weekend. A short week and a road trip to Florida doesn’t help them recover easy. But a lackluster win by the Bucs verses the Giants give the Patriots a chance to make amends.

Smooth’s Pick – New England (34-21)

Sunday, October 8th

Arizona at Philadelphia
Line: Eagles by 6½

Philly has a chance to put a stronghold on the NFC East with a win verses the Cardinals on Sunday. But Arizona’s defense will test the Eagles receivers. The line is pretty generous to Philly, but don’t count the Cards out.

Smooth’s Pick – Arizona (20-17)

Buffalo at Cincinnati
Line: Bengals by 3

The Bills have come alive with three out of four wins to start the season and an unlikely lead in the AFC East. Now comes a big task to take on the Bengals, who finally pulled out a win last weekend. A loss to Cincy would be disappointing considering Buffalo’s last two unlikely wins.

Smooth’s Pick – Buffalo (19-12)

Carolina at Detroit
Line: Lions by 2

The line on this game will go lower, as both teams are 3-1 and coming off big wins. But this game will turn on QB Cam Newton. He’s been inconsistent despite their wins, but he pulled out a big victory in Foxborough verses New England and should be a big test.

Smooth’s Pick – Detroit (21-20)

Jacksonville at Pittsburgh
Line: Steelers by 8½

The Jaguars with a disappointing overtime loss to the Jets last week. Now they have to take on a Steelers team. Jacksonville will be competitive, but their big task will be to stop the Steelers run game. That will be a factor.

Smooth’s Pick – Pittsburgh (27-13)

LA Chargers at NY Giants
Line: Giants by 3½

Both teams are 0-4 so something’s gotta give. The Bolts have nothing to lose with the long road trip and a weak secondary. The Giants have everything to lose if they go 0-5 after this game. Coach Ben McAdoo isn’t on the hot seat yet, but that could change fast.

Smooth’s Pick – NY Giants (29-17)

NY Jets at Cleveland
Line: Pick ‘em

Why? Because both teams are unpredictable. The Browns are still trying to come together, and have lost 19 out of 20 games in two seasons. The Jets have been lucky in both wins, an unlikely 2-2 in the AFC East. A win and they might just turn the corner.

Smooth’s Pick – NY Jets (20-12)

San Francisco at Indianapolis
Line: Colts by 1½

The Niners are still looking for their first win as they travel to Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts were competitive at Seattle. Then the roof caved in and they got clobbered. This may be a chance for a win, but they could sure use Andrew Luck, who won’t play this weekend.

This is my upset special!
Smooth’s Pick – San Francisco (17-13)

Tennessee at Miami
Line: Titans by 3

Tennessee looks to bounce back from a humiliating loss in Houston last weekend. They may get a break in Miami, where the Dolphins are in a freefall. Jay Cutler is not the answer at QB and their offense has only scored 8.3 points per game this season. Ouch!

This is my lock!
Smooth’s Pick – Tennessee (24-13)

Baltimore at Oakland
Line: Raiders by 2½

The Silver and Black have a crisis on their hands. With Derek Carr out 2 to 6 weeks due to injury, their Super Bowl hopes are on the edge. The Ravens have cooled since the beginning of the season with two ugly losses. This could be a low scoring fight in the trenches.

Smooth’s Pick – Baltimore (12-9)

Seattle at LA Rams
Line: Rams by 1½

This is the first time in 8 years the Rams have been favored over the Seahawks. The Rams are a surprise leader in the NFC West. Seattle finally found their offense, this after struggling for three quarters. A win could put the Rams in the driver’s seat. Who would have thunk it?

Smooth’s Pick – LA Rams (21-16)

Green Bay at Dallas
Line: Cowboys by 2

The Packers go into Dallas looking to keep pace with Detroit in the NFC North. The Cowboys coming off an ugly loss to the Rams and will look to avenge last year’s playoff loss to the Pack. This could be the game of the weekend.

Smooth’s Pick – Green Bay (23-21)

Kansas City at Houston
Line: Chiefs by 1

KC looks to continue their undefeated streak, they’ll have to do it against a pretty good Texans defense. Their run game will be tested. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson is making a case for NFL Rookie of the Year with two big wins and a tough loss to New England.

Smooth’s Pick – Kansas City (21-16)

Monday, October 9th

Minnesota at Chicago
Line: Vikings by 3

The Bears will be replacing ineffective QB Mike Glennon with their number 1 draft choice, Mitchell Trubisky. The Vikings defense will be looking at fresh meat. However, they have nothing to crow about. Sam Bradford is listed as questionable. If he plays the likelihood of an upset diminishes for the Bears.

Smooth’s Pick – Minnesota (18-10)
